Mahiru is optimistic, sensible, and unafraid to speak her mind. She's a reliable person who is prone to taking care of people, but won't hesitate to scold them either. Hajime has likened being scolded by her to being yelled at by his mom. Mahiru has high expectations of men and is quick to be abrasive towards them, while she is much more tolerant and friendly with girls. Likewise, the subjects of her photos are usually girls, as she gets bored photographing guys. Despite her love for photography, Mahiru believes her title is stupid compared to her classmates. She compares her photos to those of her mother, a famous war photographer whose career made her absent for much of Mahiru's life. Mahiru's father was a very poor parent, leaving housework entirely to her.
